Any of you ever read those dark fantasy books about how the humans are at war with everyone because they are over zealous?

I have certainly read a few WH 40k books. They are pretty good for Sci-fi.

I've read all the Horus Heresy books (about 11 to date) and really like most of them. I guess you have to be a fan of the 40k universe to understand and enjoy reading a lot of books about the complex betrayal of the Space Marine legions though.

I've read the first three of the Horus Heresey and they were quite good as a trilogy.
I liked Guant's Ghosts. It reminds me of a toned down version of Sven Hassel books in the 40K Universe.
I also quite like the books about the cowardly commissar who is like Harry Flashman. It is like Guant's Ghosts with humour.
I have read a few Space Marine novels such as the Ultramarines Omnibus and the Grey Knights.
I also read the Eisenhorn omnibus.

I think I read the first three Gaunt's Ghosts. The first one was ok but after that it just seemed to be more and more of the same to me. Which is strange as it's hyped to be one of the best 40k series...

You're right about that. I've tried several times to explain the plot of the series- It's almost impossible.
Usually i advise them to spend a week reading Codexes, and The Lexicanum.

Thanks. :good:That's the man I was thinking off.
The books are not bad at all. Just like Flashman.

I love the Horus Heresy series, then there is Commisar Cain.
The one thing I hate about warhammer though is the communist space smurfs the tau.

I'm a fan of 40k, it's one of the few 'Humans are the bad guys' things apart from Avatar that I actually like. (Well, humans are bad, but every other race is as bad or worse, there is no actual good race...)

Aye, that's pretty much how i'm seeing it right now.
There's no way that they can abide by the lore completely. Which is sad, seeing how 40K probably has one of the most detailed universes.
Atleast i can hope about it being a third-person shooter type of MMO.
Heck, anything but turn-based abilities, or buttonmashing is fine.

Button mashing would suck, but hey be an ork and we can be buddies for the rest of our bloody rampaging days!

Sadly, that would be impossible. Seeing how i feel the lure of more... Chaotic powers.
( The odds of them allowing us to play Chaos, seems low though )

Yeah i have a 5,000 point Ork army. Really fun and they are very manuvreable which means you can field a green tide or a bunch of bikes and trukks! and maybe.... don't tell anyone about this.... a Stompa! but of course i rarely play apocalypse so that big boy never gets fielded

I tried to get started. But due to lack of time...
Now i've got BOXES of CSM sprues somewhere. Could never decide on Iron Warriors or Thousands sons ._.
Otherwise, i just read the novels. Play the games, and gather as much "useless" information as i can. ( Lexicanum comes to mind )

I've got some painted Thousand Sons, almost enough for an army but I don't really paint any more figures as nobody I know here plays the game :P

It's the painting I don't like. The game looks fun though. I have a few models and played myself a couple of times.
One thing I don't like is that the books do not seem to coincide with the game with respect to Space Marines. In the books, SMs are made out to be almost invicible, but in the game, AMs take a reasonable amount of casualties.

Yeah, SM's are so exaggerated in the books it's not even funny. I suppose that's why I like the HH series as the SMs are facing each other.
I think the painting can be annoying if all you want to do is get your army ready to play and it's taking you ages but sometimes it's nice to spend a lot of time on a model to make it look good.

If Pandora existed in the 40K universe, it would probably become a protectorate of the Imperium.
They have done it before when they see alien societies that don't represent a threat to them and have a beautiful culture.
I play and collect blood ravens although I am more into painting WHFB and LOTR.
I can show you some of my minis if you wish.
Lovecraft
01-16-2010, 10:43 AM
Nope they would blow the **** out of Pandora if they got a chance. Just imagine, A bunch of Imperial Navy cruisers circling the planet and then the poison bombs drop from orbit killing the wonderful planet. You see Na'vi running about screaming and crying. You feel the pain. But the fleet commander just says "Jolly good! Lets go hunt some heritics and non believers! Lets go found regiments for fun and blow planets up! Let's kill alines that want to be our friend!

sigh... guardsmen lifes and opinions are not considered nor cared for.
It would be your worth vs that one of an inquisitor, in this case you would be reciving a straight shot at the head. Like BLAM! or HOLT!.
If the alien race does not represent a thread and is found interesting enought then they would let it live.
The imperioum would find more interest on the biology of the world , so that they could produce better biological weapons and other ways to threat psykers etc..
My source? look at the emperors children fluff, the imperioum wanted to declare a planet into a protectorate but the Emperors children refused since they where a bunch of jerks, so they took them down.
OFC that alien race had significant technology and firepower compared to the Na'vi which are in a tribal state, and the planet cant be colonized since the air is toxic to humans.

i actually play a dark heresy table top game ( more like D&D ) since a few months, its kinda exciting since we are not dead yet? the combat in warhammer 40k are freaking brutal
never read any single books about it though, im learning it through a few friends that love the setting!

Yeah but you aren't a real fan unless you paint the models.
And that's why I never got into it in the end. I hated the painting.
Another thing that bothered about me is the forces of Chaos. They seem to be so evil, it is hard to imagine how anyone would survive on Chaos dominated worlds.
I know that the Blood Pack from Gaunt's Ghosts come from chaos worlds. But it is hard to imagine how humans would survive in these worlds considering the amount of things that are likely to kill you every single day of you life In fact, in the one world where a chaos world was represented, it was hard to imagine how anyhting survived. All the humans were either wretched slaves, blood sacrifices or soldiers. It is hard to imagine how a preganant woman would survive for nine months without her or her child dying.
But perhaps things are different on chaos worlds. if someine has any infor on this, I would be interested to read your views.
The Nids are another thing. They seem to be so numerous and fanatical, it is difficult to believe how anyone can stand against them.
On the other hand, I think Orc culture is faily well explained and believable from a purely sci-fi point of view.

I haven't actually played a game for a couple of years, but still have all mine.
The painting was a weird one, I was never great at it, but made the effort because nothing's worse than playing with an unfinished army.
People turned to chaos don't reproduce, they just get replaced. The exception is the chaos space marines, who do create new members, although slowly.

To be fair in W40k pretty much everyone is at war with everyone, there is no 'benevolent' race IMO.
And yes, I'm a huge fan of 40k lore, and used to play the tabletop game as well when I was younger, now I have to make-do with the official and fan-made computer games.
I have copies of books from the first edition(which was called Rogue Trader) which had a noticeably different 'universe' from the latest 40k.
The fluff(or lore if you will) of 40k has changed radically throughout the years and it's quite fascinating to see the transformation.

Have read the Gaunts Ghosts omnibus, the Space Wolf omnibus, and a few other stand alone imperial guard ones. Really enjoyed the imperial guard ones as they have more to their characters than just shouting 'For the Emperor/Burn heretic!' a lot and chopping heretics up with chainswords.
Played WHFB for a few years but that was a good 5/6 or so years back, still got all my models as well. I played with a Khorne Chaos army btw.
