View Full Version : Will Character focus change in the sequels?

In Avatar, the story is effectively told from Jake's point of view. He is the main character and everything revolves around him and his perception of the world.
It is very rare that we see some one else's point of view. Even with Neytiri, we rarely see her point of view. And even then, Jake is involved in some way in the scene.
But do you think the focus will now change. Will the focus now be shared between different characters or perhaps (lets hoping not) there will be new characters completely.
For example, in Star wars opisode IV, Luke is clearly the main character and nearly everything is told from his point of view, although there are a few scenes where Vader and sometime's Leia's point of view in shown.
But in V and VI, the focus changes. Luke is not longer the main character as the point of view on Han Solo and Leia is shown a lot.
In Starshiptroopers the change is even more dramatic. The main charcter for the first movie, Rico, does not appear at all in 2nd, and appears only briefly in the 3rd (although I refer to forget 2 and especially 3).
So how do you think it will develop. And how do you want it to develop.
Would you like more of the same, or do you want to see other characters taking a bigger role or even becoming the main character? Or would you like to see something completely new.

I think it would be interesting to see the second movie from Neytiri's POV and/or shifting the focus to her.

Yes, Snowrider. I agree as well. I would certainly welcome that. I think given the impact of her character this is likely to happen at least in part assuming the original characters are part of the sequel.
I would like to see Neytiri develop as a character, while remaining true to her principles in times in times of strife. Then she will become a true iconic heroine.

i definitely want to see the focus/pov shift to Neytiri in the second movie. in the first film,it is Jake's journey and Neytiri is the connection that pulls him across universes, species, and cultures, from his old world/existence to her world and a life worth living and fighting for. now that Jake is firmly in her world and part of the People,Neytiri should be the driving character in this film,as she validates and strengthens his meaning and purpose to the Omaticaya. Jake will need her guidance in being the new clan chief, dealing with the inevitable naysayers within the clan, and meeting the challenges of preparing/arming for the return of the skypeople. also,if Neytiri becomes pregnant, that will definitely ramp up her story and journey. i would love to see more romantic interludes and more of their relationship, with Neytiri in the drivers seat,as she is a strong-willed and decisive personality. their quarters in the new Hometree, should be called Ney's Nest.

Yes, I definately agree in part with what you are saying. I would like to see Neytiri develop as a major character in her own right. I think this is possible now that the audience accept and love neytiri for who and what she is.
I would dearly like to see Neytiri develop her already apparent leadership qualities. I want to see her transform from her supporting role as a brave but emotionally fragile Huntress into the Warrior Priestess of the united Na'vi she is obviously destined to be. However, I think that would probably sadly be the end of Mo'at and Jake may have to be unavailable to the Na'vi as a leader (although that doesn't mean he can't play an active and important part in the movie.)
Next time I want to see Neytiri give the war rousing war speech.
I am not so sure of the pregnant aspect as it may get too much like a domestic drama. And it doesn't necessarily fit well with the dynamic action orientated character that Neytiri is. But then again, there is no reason to believe it can't work. After all, Neytiri is not human. Perhaps the Na'vi are capabale of being more active when they are pregnant. We know nothing about Na'vi pregnancy from the first movie. So being pregnant may not restrict her as she may not be restricted by human physiology. Who knows it may even give her special powers.
Being pregnant would certainly provide a story line. It would be the first mixed human/Na'vi child and thus would raise strong emotions between Na'vi and humans alike giving plenty of scope for conflict and thus storylines.
I am not so sure though that she can be the protective mother-to-be and the leader in one movie. On the other hand, why not. I suppose it is exactly the sort of attitude that I have just expressed that many women struggle against in modern society.
And one last thing. If Neytiri is preganant and has a child, I would like her to be a girl. I think that it is appropriate that the ultimate saviour of us all should be female and mixed human Na'vi. Now that would make for a beautiful ending. At leasy from my point of view.

Could be that the story splits in two, Jake and Neytiri as one group and Norm and the rest of the avatar team (with Jake and Neytiri taking the majority of screne time). Would really depend on how the story works and the level of conflict.
