Since European settlement, Australia has a disgraceful record of land clearings and extinction, and this is one shameful episode in the state I live in (Victoria): a freeway bypass is being bulldozed through some of Melbourne's last pristine bushland reserves, as described at the Save the Pines (http://savethepines.net/) website. A photo gallery (http://picasaweb.google.com/melbourneliving/WesterfieldAStoryOfABrumbyGovernmentSanctionedEnvi ronmentalAtrocity) documents the destruction in process. (If only there were some Na'vi nearby to help the protesters fight!) It's incidents like these that make me wish at times for the collapse of this blighted civilization. :nangry:

wow, pretty big highway. and alot to clear. for a start, i think its not good that they have such a small area preserved and it's surrounded by city. Sydney is kind of the same, there are pockets of national parks instead of a huge area. they should have built the city somewhere else (if that was possible). but the highway will most likely be completed. :(

at least I can see that some people protested. when something gets destroyed here (North Carolina USA) you can never find anyone to protest with, unless its mountain top removal mining, in which case I feel kind of sorry for the miners, because those protesters are hardcore.
