I want to watch it again after midterms, which is in 2-3 weeks. Do you guys think Avatar will still be in theaters by then?

Yes, 100% guaranteed. Avatar will stay in theaters as long as it's making money. I would guess that will last another 4-5 months.

I think it'll be in theaters until maybe April. Don't know for sure though. Heck, it could linger into theaters even until it's on DVD--there are those "cheapie" theaters that play movies after their initial run for less than half the cost. It'd probably get pushed back to only playing matinees/early evening shows though since they need to make room for new movies.

The IMAX near me said they will stop screening Avatar Feb. 11. But the way they are still selling out shows, i wouldn't be surprised if they pushed that back.

Most movies have a 2-3 month run depending on success. Avatar should run long enough that it pulls in enough for JC to not have to worry about the 2nd and 3rd movies. So look for it to begin being pulled around March. And possibly from Imax alittle sooner.
I wouldn't expect the DVD to be released until maybe May or June, right in time for Summer.

It may be a stretch, but I could also see a "second" release (much like Star Wars did) where it was re-released during the summer (possibly just in IMAX) to make more money. But I would love for it to make it to the summer. Then it would just blow Titanic away!

It may stay there for a long time even when the Blu Ray comes out as you can only view it in 3D at the cinema.

It would be cool to see Star Wars beaten in the End by Avatar.. If it would stay that long it would be amazing.
But at least its awesome to see that at least Star Wars Episode 1 is soon history in the domestic box office results stated in boxofficemojo :)

My theater actually created more showtimes for this movie, rather than removing showtimes. (It is now screening Avatar on 3 of the 8 screens, whereas a week ago it was only showing it on 2 screens. )
The first few weeks a movie is in theatres, almost all of the revenue generated by ticket sales goes to the studio (in this case Fox), so the longer it stays, the more money the theatre chains make. In the case of this film, especially for non-IMAX theatres equipped with 3D, the first film that comes out that uses similar (if inferior :P) 3D technology is the new Alice in Wonderland by Disney, which doesn't hit until March 5th, and the next one to hit after that is How to Train Your Dragon on March 26th.
So my conservative guess is that if people are still going to see it come February, it stays all the way through February until like the second week in March. The theatre chains would be stupid to get rid of it even if attendance goes down to 33% full, as they are all making a premium of the 3D screenings. Hell, maybe it lasts even longer if Alice is as terrible as people have been saying.
For the 2D version of the film, it becomes harder to guess as all it will take is a popular film to knock it out. Looking at the release schedule in 2010, there is nothing great until May (http://www.film-releases.com/film-release-schedule-2010.php). If it is still drawing people by Feb it too could last all the way through March, it really depends where people's tastes and heads are at come February I guess.
IMAX? Avatar could last until summer. The new release schedule for the IMAX theatres is really sparse up until July, with many theatres showing older films or IMAX 'versions' of some of the 2010 3D movies due out over the course of the year. If I was being conservative, I would say end of March until it stops playing, and that would only be to make room for How To Train Your Dragon. Even then, depends on each individual IMAX, as there is no such thing as a national release schedule for this chain. Indeed, where I live, Avatar doesn't come to our IMAX until February!
Funnily enough, on April 16th another 3D film comes out that should be near and dear to James Cameron's heart: Piranha 3D!! He directed Piranha 2 (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0082910/) after all...
One thing is clear, based on current box office totals, this film is a phenom and will outlive many of the films being released around it. January is a lock given how much bank it's generating coming into the middle of the month.

Movies come out a lot faster now than back in 1997 when Titanic came out.
Titanic was in theaters for 41 weeks...I don't think Avatar will be in theaters THAT long, but my guess is at least another 3-4 weeks easy.

Im guessing this will be in theaters until March. I bet the release date gets pushed back for the Blu-ray/DvD too, they usually do, and if Avatar keeps making money, I don't see them taking it out of theaters just to release it on Dvd. Especially if it's creeping up on Titanics box office record.

i was thinking part of the original marketing plan for the movie would be to outdo titanic in terms of length of stay in theaters, I had no idea 41 weeks was the record?

Yeah....movies that stay in theaters longer than 3 months now are considered Anctient (but more movies are also comeing out now). The big challenge is lasting - Avatar's main + is that you can see it in IMAX 3D and 3D, neither of which can be currently viewed at home, this results in people wanting to see it the Biggest, Loudest that they can (which I have no problem with, since it's that awesome!)

What they should do...
1. Reduce screenings as necessary, on a per-theater basis, to fit in other movies. This shouldn't be done at all until it's no longer close to selling out each screening. When it is done, each of the 3 formats (2D, RealD 3D, IMAX 3D) should be evaluated independently and reduced as necessary.
2. When the 2D version isn't making enough money at one screening per theater per day, NOT before, pull it and simultaneously release the 2D DVD and Blu-ray.
3. When both the RealD 3D and IMAX 3D versions aren't making enough money at one screening per theater per day, pull them and release the 3D Blu-ray. This should happen AT LEAST 40 weeks after the opening date.

I can't stand it now. I want to have a DVD so I can watch it nightly and not pay my monies to keep seeing it in 3D. Though....it'd look better on home theater than the small tv I have now.....hmmm....

Better and more environmentally conscious idea. Buy a projector, that way you can have an actual home theater (say a 12' by 18' screen!) and use less products that are harmful to the environment (such as the big TV and all it's components, etc!)

It's worth it people, you're going to watch Avatar!
As for the original question about how long Avatar will remain in theaters, I personally think it will be in theaters for a couple of months more at the most as they will have to remove it from theaters to build hype for the DVD and Blu-Ray release, it's standard practice and I highly doubt they will change the formula for Avatar.

3D would be a little harder to pull off, however it would still be plain out awesome, only problem is make sure the wall is white - otherwise it has a kind of tint that makes you scratch your head.

I would never say we are wasting money because it's worth it.. The Dark Knight spent 33 weeks and survived the fall-winter movie cramming during the holidays. Titanic spent around 41 weeks in the same predicament all the competition wasn't as much... Avatar will probably fall in the middle.. However because it is in 3d theaters and it is slowly losing its 2d theaters... 3d releases that are going to be vying for those limited 3d theaters will probably force it out sooner...but i will say that the box office record domestically will happen way before there is cause to worry about losing prime theater space and i am okay with that. Longevity in theaters doesn't equate more money as seen in the previous month...Avatar only really needs 12-15 weeks to make this happen..after that its going to anything extra it wants to add to its record...
cheers
