It is said that an Avatar fan has been working on a Unobtainium model which can float in the air like the one in the movie and the sample will be finish in a few days. Also, the model of floating Hallelujah Mountain will be made following. The price of it will be around 50 to 70 US dollar allegedly.

Like off Selfridge's desk?
You've got me interested.
cool, do want to see pics :D the floating mountains would be something i would love to have floating in my room

I would buy a hammock and make it float. :D

Well, I've created stuff like this before and him charging 50 - 70 dollars is practically robbery imo... Order a bag of neodymium magnets from magnet4less.com for a few bucks, grab a block of wood (or other preferred material), and take out the drill. Super glue the magnets in a way that you see fit (some experimentation required) and there you go! You could probably build this yourself for under $20, including the cost of shipping the magnets and the wood.
but yes, it would be neat to have :nsmile:

Can you show me a picture of it? I have tried for times to float a magnet in the air with some other permanent magnets, but failed. It is impossible for me to keep the magnet at the balanced position to let it float. The magnet always turned and stuck with the one below. How did you do that? Or I misunderstood your meaning?

How many of this product is going to be produced? Or is it only one guy selling one item?

If there are enough customers, the product will be produced in a large scale.

There are models that let things float in mid air indeed. I have a earth model that floats. But that one needs a magnet above and one below and is electronically balanced. There are newer ones that look better though, also electronically balanced:
Magic Floater Globus freischwebend Floating World 14 cm Globus 14 cm - Ausgefallene Geschenke u. originelle Geschenkideen (http://www.geschenkbox.de/product_info.php/info/p514/)
(with Video)
So no problem to make the plastic around it the shape of unobtanium, mountains or an Ikran ;)

To tell you the truth, the Unobtainium model mentioned in #1 is made by me.:nsmile: But it hasn't been finished yet.

Unfortunately, I have no pictures. It was for a school physics project a few years back, and my partner ended up keeping the final builds. We found that the best way to keep something floating was to add stabilizer fins that had their own magnets ( 2mm neodymium ). This DID lead to awkwardly shaped floating objects, but it was significantly more stable than no fins. Another trick is to make sure that the center of gravity on the floating object is as low as possible. Lastly, try having 2 separate sections of magnets on the base. A center "core" with one polarity, and an outer ring with the opposite. This way, a floating object with the same design will have the bottom attracted to the center of the base, while the ring keeps it afloat. This is has a similar effect to lowering its center of gravity.
I hope that was helpful, even though I couldn't provide pics.
Note: If anyone is going to try this, Neodymium magnets are somewhat fragile. If you let them attract to each other and collide, they will likely crack or even completely shatter. I suggest protecting them with small foam or balsa wood shims. Also, super glue is your friend. Your going to need a lot of it to keep those incredibly strong magnets in place.

If you really managed to float permanent magnets in midair without electronic correction, I'd really like to see a drawing. I didnt think this would be possible at all from all I tried in the past.

seriously?
create an Unobtainium model who can float like the mountains on Pandora?
if our planet has the ingredients you need

Damn, i dont think even the military can make that happen :/ Well, gl and if he manage to invent it, we travel to pandora ^^
Maybe if you have an understanding of the magnetic field patterns and lines of force you can make a ring shaped stable 'cushion' for a magnified object to 'float on'. Maglev trains do it. Would be a good project to try out with some permanent magnets.

This looks cool. Maybe a floating model of an ISV on a large magnet. :)
