View Full Version : Donation system
By request and out of necessity I have reluctantly enabled the donation system once again. The advertisement campaigns that run on here are pretty much a fail therefore I must utilize all available means to keep the site afloat financially.
We require a minimum of $250 a month to cover basic costs until such time as we gather corporate support, additional long term advertisers or simply close up shop. Sorry but that's the facts.
Those who donate will receive the "Site Supporter" title under their user name and be listed in the donation system as a site supporter. The donation "bar" will also be made visible on the index page so everyone can see where we stand at any given time during the month. The bar will reset at the beginning of each month.
Thanks everyone, I hope this works!

Can you please post, or if you would rather, PM me, with the advertising rates? I've never been able to find them and clicking on the 'Advertise' button in the menu bar does nothing.

You may want to consider giving members more incentive to donate. Some ways of doing so would be to add donator-only content, such as a sub-forum, more special titles, ability to turn off ads, etc. I understand there are people who expect everything from you after donating, but I believe the positive effects of adding a donation system outweigh the bad.

Lon, I think there might be an error with the donation system...I've tried to donate a few times over the past couple of days and it takes me to a page where it says "This recipient is currently unable to receive money." Or did I miss something and you shut it down?

I can't donate.
When I click the option, it forwards to a Paypal page stating: "This recipient is currently unable to receive money."
PayPal has been a bitch over the pay week or so. They froze my acccount for a bit because I received too many transactions at once. However after a few calls, and some verified information is has been restored. You may donate using PayPal again.

Aw, now I can't donate because I can't make an instant payment (I don't have a credit card). Can you make it so I can pay non-instantly with an e-cheque? (They usually take a few days to process).
Edit: Figured out how to do it without a credit card. Had to transfer money into Paypal and then once it processed I could donate "instantly".

Thanks.

I mean this with all due respect, and I think some of the members would like to know as well...
If we keep a 250 dollar monthly donation up, can we ditch the ads? If they are "fail" anyways, why keep 'em? Or at least ditch some of the ones that bring in the least revenue?

If you look at the math if every user registered on the site were to donate only $5 each we would be able to run AVATAR-FORUMS for almost 3 years without worry. Think about it 5 bucks, everyone could easily find that available.

Funny how this bit is strangely quiet. Nevertheless good forum members are donating. I put my two penneth in. Communities like this are too important to let slip, when new friendships have been made, people helped and new ideas brought to life...Oh and Avatar discussed to death as well :rotfl:
Keep up the good work folks,

i dont think you shoulda disabled the colored names, i donated $30 back when we started and it bummed me out when i lost it
Thanks everyone for the continued donations. While we don't meet the monthly requirements, it's still better than having me foot the entire hosting bill every month. I understand that a lot of people simply dont have any money to spend and I've had many emails me asking how they can help without spending any money. Here's the answer:
See the ads that frequent the forum? There's a big one on top from Google, and there's several smaller pop-up like ones that are peppered in posts from Kontera. When you click on those and visit that advertisers site we get paid - it's that simple. The revenue is anywhere from .15 cents to as high as $1.00 for each visit. Seriously if a few people just used that as their way of donating I could actually upgrade and enhance this website. There's so much potential, we have the traffic for it, just not the understanding that your efforts can support the site.
Finally I removed the banner ads that appeared in the beginning of the threads and at the bottom of the forum. Often the banner was the same ad as the one that appeared at the top therefore it seemed pretty stupid to have them placed elsewhere. Thanks!

hi all....
only posted a few times but this site is great and full of amazing people .i have donated and will continue to do so every month thats how great this site is and i think alot of other members know this as well. keep up the excellent work .
I updated the donation system to read $130 for the month because that's the exact amount that we need each month to pay the server bills. I asked Sadao to verify this by going into my hosts billing system and he did. Since a lot of people have donated and continue to do so I thought is was important to keep these things as transparent as possible. If anyone else wants a peek so they can verify what I posted with regards to cost, and why the server was offline, please send me a PM and I'll give you the login details to my hosts billing system. Cool?
Thanks,
Lon

Also because clicking on the ads generates revenue I will try to do that as well, and everyone else should too as an easy way to help raise money.

I just donated what little I was able to donate and it was actually all I had left over from last month. I致e been trying to get my financial situation to the point where I知 able to donate often because Avatar-Forums means a great deal to me and I would really like to contribute to this wonderful place. I hope things pick up for me after the first of the year. I知 still trying to get a business off the ground so I知 trying to balance the bills and run a business and because much of that comes out of my pocket I never have much left over. I知 still recovering financially due to an error on my behalf earlier this year. What was just a simple mistake left me without any food in the house for five weeks. (As it turns out I really do need to double-check my math each time). So I致e been entering each month a little behind for the past few months. Once I get things ironed out I plan to donate regularly, but right now I知 only going to be able to contribute a few dollars here and there.

We reached our goal last month HURRAY for us. Lets see if we can do i again, ya'll notice I have updated the goal amount to $140 (US). This new goal is set higher because the previous goal of $130 only covered the very minimum we need to keep the site running. This way we can accumulate an extra set of funds to ensure the longevity of the forum and also to cover any future expenses we may experience in upgrades or services. Thanks guys and continue to show your support through regular donations.

I wonder, why it is so expensive to run this site...I can have premium Hostingpackages here in GER for 50 EUR incl unlimited traffic or even a root server for a few euros.
Is it that more expensive in US?
I have donated USD 10 just a few secs ago, hope it helps.
Sadao
02-10-2011, 12:37 AM
Yes it is that much more expensive here in the US. Our host site is Host Gator.com (http://www.avatar-forums.com/www.hostgator.com) and we are currently running a Level 6 VPS Server. I am not sure what all hosting costs are like in Europe but you have to take in to account that the internet and its providers are neither the same or run with the same regulations, couple that with inflation costs and different dollar values and there you go more expensive. I appreciate that you donated and yes every bit helps, as you may have noticed we are actually over our goal amount for the month. Thank you for your continued involvement and support towards the site.
Sadao
02-10-2011, 09:14 AM
1) Hopefully not; The goal was only raised this month so that overflow revenue can work to buid up a back of or emergency source of money to cover any shortage in donations.
2) Mathmatics says so; The doantion bar displays its values throu a simple ration ((Amount Donated/Goal)*100= Percent Donated) or in this case ((150/140)*100=107%) That's all that is.
3) That's your own choice

I am on AF since July 2010 and altho I post very little (I read the others' posts instead :) ), I recognize the importance of this site, and I am and will donate when and as much as I deem right.
My opinion (only): do we like this site? do we get something here? Like, new friends, likeminded people, unload & share our thoughts, feelings and impressions (that probably no one in RL will understand)? not only about the movie and Pandora but also about what's happening on our own home planet? In short, do we receive something? Then it's right to give something. Just for the sake of the balance (that Eywa maintains) if nothing else.
So yes, I donate, cos I feel it's right and "my heart tells me so" (the Apache way).
Oel Ngati Kamele, Avatar people!
(PS Question: will the donations help to ensure that the forum doesn't crash again as it did in December 2010?)

Yes continued donations will prevent from future downtime. Hopefully the site will stand for as long as possible but this is still dependent on donations coming in. If we continue to receive donations that exceed our goal then our spill over can help cover and shortage we may encounter. This is again why I raised the donation goal awhile back so as to allow for the creation of a money reservoir. Also the extra money allows for purchases to create a better site for all.

The donation system is slowly failing. As Sadao can confirm we're currently only collecting about 1/2 of what's needed to simply pay the server bills. Forget actually being viable or making any extra; it's not been happening for sometime now.
We currently only have 28 supporting members who have been supporting things for a while. I now understand why the other Avatar sites have advertising everywhere for all their members.
I'm open to ideas to increase revenue so we can have a fiscally viable forum. Without any solid plan or stable support I'll be forced to implement advertising across all user groups throughout the forum.

about the not donating. actually I seriously can't miss anything. need a new things for my school and stuff. already happy that my family is supporting my stuff.

this is sad :nsad: so many users yet so little donations. i don't think people realize how little they need to contribute. if its $140 a month and people donated the minimum of $5 then thats 28 people who need to donate, only $5 a month.....but if you don't have a credit card then fine
*i'm not pointing fingers at anyone (afterall i don't know who it is) but i think some people just like to pretend this forum runs on unlimited resources and dismiss the possibility of donating which is frustrating. well, if AF does go down then it was nice knowing you all.

Whatever you say Lon, we're definitely in good hands, Irayo :nsmile:
I tried to keep ads off of AVF, and did so for a long time. But lately, as you know, the economy has hurt us all in more ways than I can't even describe. Therefore out of sheer need, our revenue will now be ad based.
I'm done with the installation. There's 2 banners on top, 1 in the middle, and a couple of text link pop-ups scattered about. AVF receives revenue when people click on and view the advertisers site. The revenue ranges from say .10 cents up-to .75 cents a click. The green underlined text ads currently pay the most. Typically ads that are either animated or video in nature pay the most. Depending on traffic and the CTR (click through rate) sites make anywhere from a few dollars on up per day. The more traffic and the higher CTR the more revenue; it really is that simple.
I was happy to see an ad for Colombiana around the forum. Perhaps that ad is a sign of good things to come.
...Marching on until the bitter end...

I dont think you will hear any of us complain about the ads Lon. I appreciate you working hard and spending your time and money and to all the other people that have donated to keep it ad free for as long as it has, and for continuing keeping it, in my opinion, the premier Avatar forum on the web.
Besides this one I've been a member of 3 other Avatar forums, one no longer exists, one is add free, and one has ads. I like to read the other forums simply because you can learn different things on them, they each have their strengths and weaknesses and from being on one that already has ads I dont think they will take away from this forum at all. The strenghts here will shine through, and that is the family like atmosphere and all of the knowledgeable people on here. There is a wealth of Avatar related knowledge on here than many people we be curious about when the Novel comes out and when the next movie comes closer. Thinking about it excites me!
I hope instead of going from not being able to meet costs with this forum you can flip that and now be able to make costs plus make some money. I'm going to try to make a conscious effort to click on the ads regularly and I hope everyone else does as well.
Irayo Lon.
do we have to actually click on the ads or can we right click and open it in a new tab? that's what i've always done since it doesn't distract me from viewing the forum
will it still be possible to donate?
That's a good question prowler. We currently have 29 people in the "website supporter" usergroup, and newcomers may want in at some point. It's also the only usergroup that allows you to customize your title.
As many know, over the past say, 5 months, the same 8 people have been supporting the site with donations. Beyond that we've developed a "base" of people loyal to the site concept. What's truly remarkable is that we're surviving, knee deep in the Avatar ideology, without any movie or marketing efforts going on that would bring in new people. That's truly remarkable.
I'm going to go code up a plugin that allows people to join the "website supporter" usergroup via a simple donation. I'll reply back shortly.

Thankyou, and sorry for disturbing but these things kind of unsettle me ://

hi,Lon. i have been wanting to donate to this fabulous website for sometime now,and have been having some issues with those scraps of paper in my wallet, particularly since the new year started. anyway,to make a long story short,i finally received this overpayment check i have been waiting on,and i made a donation to the site today. i'm writing this because i did receive an email confirmation of donation by paypal, but i kept getting all these redirects when i would log back on to AF,then the redirect would just sit, saying 'please wait...' and never do anything. this happened about four times before i could log on normally. paypal still shows receipt of payment,as does my card. i just wanted to let you know that, since the redirects were rather baffling,in that i had finished my transaction, but it apparently kept trying to send me back to the donation page.
have a nice day,and thanks again for an always great time here. irayo
Thank you Ja'k, your donation has been received. :loyal: You'll notice your username is a little more purple now. :). If anyone else wishes to donate, you may do so here: Smilies - Avatar Forums (http://www.avatar-forums.com/misc.php?do=donate) To see who has donated, take a look here: Smilies - Avatar Forums (http://www.avatar-forums.com/misc.php?do=donlist) Thanks again!

It simply states PayPal to my email address; there's no Avatar name in the transaction whatsoever. :)

ok, I think I just made a donation. don't know it for sure. I had some money on my paypal account but it was never there. (weird story, I had it but I couldn't see it) so hopefully it worked. :)

How are things going with having ads now Lon? Are they generating enough $$$ to pay for the site yet?
It started off well, then quickly flat lined. Most people like myself have banner blindness and don't see them after a while. Donations have dried up as well. :(

I do the same thing, just look right over them...
Well crap...I bet people arent donating because they think the ads are taking up the slack, I was hoping you would do very well off the ads. But its good to know we need to keep donating.

How about we make our own ad? Something to grab more attention. The donate button and donate thread are pretty small.
Like a Colonel Quaritch (as Uncle Sam) poster saying "We need you to donate!" or "We need your help".
With all the talented artists here, I am sure someone could create a little banner or something.
^ that's a really good idea :nlol: i recently chipped in $20 but it took me a while to find the donte button which is small so maybe people give up after not being able to find it :(

I think its a good idea to make the donation bar visible again and possible banner like Nicodem said.

+1, I also was worried about where it was. atleast whe have the feeling that something is happening. (not that I'm worried that it isn't used right but you know what I mean ;)) to see that we are helping you is much more important to me then the "avatar supporter" or the purple name :)

I have a better location idea for it. Like after the first post in the threads.
I also removed the banner from that spot, and currently just have the two square ads on top.

I have Fire Fox with adblock plus and easy list and I don't have ads on any forums I visit. If I do find one, I just right click and add filter. Gone. Of course that doesn't help with the problem of $250. monthly bill to run this place.

vB, the makers of our forum software have released their new integrated Facebook application. It connects securely to our Facebook page so users can browse the forum from Facebook. Here's the promo video for it.

I'd like to get it, but unfortunately it's $100, and we're not even covering the basics at this time.

That's funny, if I hated this forum I would not be here. What ever gave you that idea? I was surprised to hear talk of ads when I have never seen one.
something else I have done.
I stopped the videos also, not because I hate them because the movement makes me queasy. Now what are you going to make of that?

That's pretty cool Lon, I hope at some point soon the forum raises enough to actually gain money again so you can ads features like that. I know if all us active users only gave a small amount per month that could easily happen. I also realize not everyone can give due to their circumstances.

I know you all are wondering why there are not more donations, maybe you need to look at it from another point of view, priorities. The active posters have bonded with each other and this site. This site is very, very important to them, it's like family to some. They need to give all they can to keep it open. If that is not enough the site will go down just like any business if there are not enough customers. I enjoy being here and learning about Avatar and the characters but I have a life outside this computer. If I give my money away it will be to my struggling grand children and great grands or my young single friend who is struggling to live an independent life. I have offered to share my home with her until she gets on her feet. Or my son who is handicapped and needs help. I bought him a computer last summer and it has given him a reason to get up in the mornings.
Someone suggested cutting out part of this site as a way to save money. I don't know how sites like this work, but it that would help I think that needs to be done.

sorry for the offtopic, but I love that one. don't get me wrong i'm really sorry for your son (don't know whats wrong with him) but I mean that this technology has gave him a reason to go on.
and again, not offense ;)

No offense taken. My son has a breathing problem and if he catches a cold he has to go immediately to the ER and be admitted. He can die of a simple cold. Yes and the computer gave him as reason to get up in the morning because he has no other interests or family around him. Now he can communicate with family and friends, while learning something new. I can remember when I got my first PC, it was very exciting. Years ago after I bought my PC, I realized how important they were going to be in the future, so my husband and I bought computers (3) for our kids who still had children at home. Two years ago I bought one for my husband's nephew. He is an amateur photographer who has many problems, loss of self esteem is one of them. He broke his back a few years ago, his wife divorced him, he owes back child support, can't see his kids and at the age of 50 he is living with his parents. His father is an arrogant SOB who rides him every day about everything and he had suicidal thoughts. The last time I spoke to his Mom she was so happy, the computer gave him a reason to get up on the mornings. He is a different person now.
I reread my first post and you may be thinking he needs different help like food and money. He is receiving all of that kind of help he needs from Catholic Charities. He doesn't need that kind of help. He needs something to look forward to.
