something crossed my mind while watching the movie today..would they be able to conceive a child using conventional methods given that jake is half human? i know with science they were able to mix the two DNAs together to form an avatar, but during mating would it be possible?

hmm i don't think anyone really knows right now. maybe in the future movies? it would be interesting to see how that would work. in my opinion, i don't think that it is possible due to the differences in DNA
Neytiri.

!!!!!SPOILERS FOR THE LAST DRAFT OF SCRIPT IF YOU HAVE NOT READ IT!!!!!
EXT. RAINFOREST - DAY
The sun’s rays shaft down through the layers of canopy.
JAKE (V.O.)
The forest will heal, and so will the
hearts of the People. New life keeps the
energy flowing, like the breath of the
world.
NEYTIRI, obviously pregnant, is bow-fishing in the shallows.
Children jump and squeal with laughter in the river.
JAKE (V.O.)
This is my last videolog.
That is from one of the final drafts of script.
So yes, I think according to Cameron it's possible.

They're the same species now so it certainly looks so.

Well, I guess thats up to Cameron, but I would say yeah, why not.

I would imagine so. But since Jakes DNA (well, okay, his brothers) was mixed with Na'vi DNA--wait that brings up something else, the baby would party have the DNA of Jake's brother. Hm. Anyway back to my point. Since the DNA is mixed, perhaps their child we have some traits of a human--5 fingers, eyebrows, etc.

I'm cool with her getting pregnant just...not til the 3rd film please.

I think that I would be possible and since Jake and his brother were identical twins, hence why they could swap them out it would still be his baby.

Not to mention that when main characters have children, the main characters' personality changes. Sometimes when characters have children in sequels, the bratty children become the primary focus (main characters) of the film.
Examples of this would be The Mummy 2, and the Lion King 2.
Hopefully James Cameron will learn from these mistakes, and have Neytiri and Jake abstain from having kids. They still have much ahead of them!

the question is.. would it be a boy or a girl?
or both? and by that I mean twins.
Avatar has alot on the eastern folklore, with the flying mountains and the blue color like Shiva.
So the twin thing could go with a little bit of mayan folklore if desired.

I think the human DNA they insert in the Avatar bodies is just to make your nerve system work with the body. And since Jake left his human body and entered his Na'vi body for good they can probably have kids.

In the body or not the DNA is still there, might make things a little more difficult. As long as enough Na'vi DNA is present in Jake it could work.

Maybe Jake could just plug into Eywa and pray for a bad *** Na'vi/Human (now that's a potent mix!) like he did for the final battle. On a serious note I do believe it is possible, give or take there would be swapped traits. As stated previously in the thread, I hope no one gets knocked up for awhile, maybe save it for the ending and assume everyone is happy?

they would because his normal body died at the end so he is completely Na'vi now!

Well depends. No one is quite sure what really happened in the 'sex' scene with Jake and Neytiri. It will all be answered in the DVD anyway. I really hope she isn't pregnant, it would be pointless and for some reason rather cheesy to put in the 2nd movie. And actually seeing her pregnant in the 2nd movie is not going to be Neytiri's best moments I must say.

If there were twins, then JC'll be following the clichéd trend that has hijacked almost every major TV soap opera...

Hey, don't diss Returns just because of the stupid kid. ;)

Yeah, according to Cameron's script, they can.
I'd think that the genetic code of avatars and Na'vi is a bit too different, though, and if they could produce an offspring, it'd be sterile. Kinda like horses and donkeys produce sterile mules. But that's just my thinking :)

that would suck! but avatars are hybrids on their own and he was able to get her pregnant
mules can't do that at all but you do bring up a good point
in the end it's up to cameron

I don't know...I would like to see a child sometime in the movie, but the avatars were grown from a combination of human and Na'vi DNA. Does that fact make Jake and Neytiri compatible or incompatible? Because after all, human DNA was used to grow a Na'vi body...

I think that would be a great addition to the story, it would certainly bring them closer. I can't imagine Neytiri pregnant, though. She's too aggressive and active to chill when it was time... and imagine her bizarre cravings... Jake would have to show off some serious hunting chops when she started craving fresh Makto!
Human No More
01-11-2010, 08:04 PM
I would say yes, since the avatars are mostly na'vi, the human DNA is to allow control of the nervous system (and causing a few physical differences, like fingers)
What would be interesting though is whether avatar features would be passed on to the child or not.

I think they could but at this moment we don't know what JC has in mind even though in the 2007 script put in she was. It was on the second last page if I remember correctly. I just checked the script and it was on the second last page. So maybe it was filmed and not put into the movie. We'll just have to wait until the next 2 movies to find out. I'm hoping they have twins. Twice the amount of chaos. ;)

Well if the avatars are 50/50 human/na'vi hybrids, then the offspring would be 25% human, however seeing as Na'vi and humans share 98% of their DNA, the amount of inserted human genes would be minimal, just enought to cause the link to be possible, and some inadvertant look changes, but the DNA is so close, I doubt it would be much of a problem in terms of conception, and most of the genes are Na'vi , so I would assume the offspring would be pretty darn close to being 100% Na'vi.

75% Na'vi 25% Human. If they do indeed share 98% of their DNA with us then it will be far closer like 87% 13%.
