You've seen how far it can go, I mean this movie is almost perfect! The question is, do you think the sequel can reach the same bar or even surpass the first one? I cannot help but think of The Matrix... The first one was and still is hands down one of the most amazing movies of all times, but reloaded and revolutions were a let down in my eyes, especially reloaded. I really hope JC is not going to make the sequel all about epic scale battles or what not. With The Matrix, it was about discovering the unknown and when it was gone and our hero became basically superman, there was no longer that attraction that got me into the movie, despite the amazing action scenes. I really hope JC knows this and he'll provide us with a story that keeps us wondering, as there certainly is a similarity between these two movies.

Nah JC knows what he's doing. Besides, he also made Terminator 2 which is, in my opinion, one of the best sequels of all time :)

The sequel will probably not start PAD again, maybe a tiny bit of sadness but not the full-blown depression that affected so many.
I think the sequel wont be better than the first (why T2 is one of the best sequels made is because T1 was nothing compared to it).
The problem is, that people will have higher expectations than Avatar 1 and will probably be let down as the sequel's predecessor was, as you stated, almost perfect. You cant really top something that is almost perfect.
It's like a sequel to the Dark Knight, it wont be better.
But this is JC we're talking about, Im sure he'll hammer out a great movie for us and besides, we're fans, we're still going to love more Avatar no matter how good or bad the sequel may be.

Reloaded and Revolutions were stinkers. Terminator 3 was vastly underwhelming. Spider-Man 3 was a mess. Quantum Of Solace was a crushing disappointment. It is true that many sequels to great films have a tendency to suck donkey balls. Whenever I think of sequels that proved equally entertaining if not superior to their predecessors, Empire Strikes Back, Aliens, Terminator 2 and The Dark Knight always come to mind. Cameron revealed the sequel will not have "Avatar" in the title since Jake is now a Na'vi. That would help distance the sequel from the first movie and work as a stand alone movie since they have different titles.

The "sequel" will only be better to individuals whether critics and reviewers say it is or not is not something to gauge it on. I've seen terrible reviews for most movies I watch and I enjoy them because I allow them to entertain me.
Don't go to the sequel for Avatar and expect to be blown away like the first becuase it won't work. Go in with an open mind and enjoy what you paid to see. You won't think it's better if your comparing it with the original no matter how conservative you are with your views.
Now to show this can actually happen look at the LOTR trilogy. Each had their own flaws and pros but were all fantastic. Granted it's one long movie cut into 3 but so then is Avatar right? That's just my thoughts

It can, but the question should really be, will it.

No. There is no way that the sequel, or anything for several years at least, will ever surpass the original, especially if it's related to Avatar.

I think it will be a brilliant sequel

No, I do not think it will. However I still think it will do good.

I think that it depends a lot on how JC approaches it. If it is an all out battle sequence themed movie, like Rasomaso stated, it would fail. I do think that it has a chance to be better than the original if it takes a fresh approach and still keeps some of the core elements that made the first one a success. Besides, this is JC, the guy who continually keeps on giving us better and better movies as is shown by the progression of Terminator 2 to Titanic to Avatar which all earned more than the last and broke records. Honestly I don't think that there is much of a chance of the sequel beating the original in this case, but he could pull it off... In any case, I will be there opening day to watch it! :nlol:

I guess we'll find out in 4 or so years. If anyone can do it then JC can. If it's done right then i'm sure it could.

Well, i didnīt like Matrix very much. It has been one of the most overrated movies of all times. Matrix is the mith of the Cavern of Platon. Nothing new under the sun in that story. Nice LP videoclip.
But i LOVE AVATAR. I think it s the best movie of all times, for me, and i think that the sequel can be better.

I think JC has learned a lot in speaking with the indigenos peoples when he visited Brazil (amazon rainforest) in seeing first hand what he spoke about as "living in Avatar for real" and in his offering the film for subjective criticism to such people and listening to what they had to say , He has claimed the the second film will have a "water" theme and involve pandoras oceans on some manor , one can guess an unballence with ocean life or an issue with RDA effecting ocean life in some way . things I do know Avatar 2 will be filmed in 4K resolution as expected the huge ammont of added detail over the orignal will make a big diffrence , JC wants to use 60 frame per second 3D (over the orignal 24) this makes a huge diffrence in 3D presentation with all motion flowing in very natural way ,an issue with 24 FPC 3D is image judder and this goes away at the higher frame rate.
one thing I dont want to see is "The RDA Strikes Back" but given what I have heard about opinions of Dialog over warfare he has spoken about (and the fact that fox pushed more action into the first film thinking a enviromental film would fail if it was not there. I assume JC given the first films sucess will be able to create the film totaly the way he wants to tell the story and kick fox to the sidelines. only time will tell .
