View Full Version : "Back in the cinema by popular demand..."

That's what the program websites of movie theaters in my area (Ruhr area, Germany) are reading today - "awarded with 3 Academy Awards, in Real-D 3D..." - Avatar us back at the movies... of course, just the regular version... man, would that have been a surprise if they'd snuck a director's cut by under the radar, huh?
:nlol:
I guess the "popular demand" was also prompted by Fox officials wishing to raise the fox, err box office scores before the DVD is released.
Or it was persistent Avatards calling for it to return.
Whatever the reason, I'm delighted.

In Mülheim war er schon länger aus dem Programm (zumindest ium Forum) und ist ab heute wieder da... ich hab ihn aber bisher immer in Duisburg gesehen.

The movie's theatrical run here ends tonight.
In less than an hour, the penultimate showing will begin.
I was thinking of going down to the theater and seeing the movie One Last Time, but I think I will wait until the DVD comes out in three weeks.

I'll probably go see the movie one time there when they get it.

The cinema in my town still shows Avatar too (since release without break). This movie is indeed outstanding!
About the same here (region of Cologne) - UCI did add an evening showing to the afternoon showing again(at least for now) and the Cinedom is giving Avatar three showings a day since weeks(and talking to the employee taking reservations on the phone, it likely will be the same for next week) Only the OV which they had for this week will be taken out again.
But here I am starting to hope that they will show it until very very close to the DVD-release.

40 times may sound like overkill, but no matter how many times I see AVATAR, I never feel that I've seen it enough times. It's like enjoying a really good meal. Are you going to stop having good meals because you've already had 40 good meals in the past? No. The same goes for Avatar. It's food for my mind and spirit. I just want to go over and over again, and feel very sad each time the movie is over.

I can't wait for the Blu Ray. Also, like you, I am probably getting a new TV in the next little while, a 42" or 50" Plasma most likely. I was already planning on a new TV before Avatar was coming out on Blu Ray, but now that it is releasing soon, I desire the new TV even more now!

One theater playing it in 3D around here. Not sure for how much longer? A bit of a haul to get to but me and a friend made the trek on Easter night as they are only doing a 9:00 pm showing. Oh so worth it!! Brings my total up to 7.
We were not alone as they theater was pretty well full!

Heh, as I wrote earlier (meant as a joke), I could well do that Perseus Sully double feature... they're showing Avatar in Real D 3D at 4.45 pm and then Clash of the Titans in Real D 3D at 8.15 pm at the theatre near my place... although I'm kinda biased. Sam Worthington will always remain in my mind as the guy who played Jake.

haha, exactly this. With the exception I really hadn't had any need for the TV before Avatar. I can't decide which size 46"/50" because my viewing distance is only 2 meters, but never mind... bigger will be OK for Avatar in full HD :nlol:. As you mention a viewing distance of only two meters, even 42'' may do for you just fine !
However, if you or anyone else here decides for new TV set consider these facts before buying:
1. Get the TV set with higher contrast ratio !
2. ..... with higher color saturation
3. .... lower motion blur ( 100HZ+, 200Hz is better or plasma TV's have 600HZ noMotion Blur technology)
4 It should be Full HD (1080p).
5.If you can choose between the brands, choose : SONY (LCD), LG (LCD), Panasonic (plasma) or Sharp (plasma).

OK, done it... I booked a round-trip to Pandora, then ancient Greece and back home coming Sunday (I still hope to end up stuck on Pandora... it didn't work so far) - both movies in Real-D 3D, of course... Lets see how Sam does against the Titans.

Yes, if you do decide on an LCD HDTV I would say buy a Sony or Samsung. Haven't had any experience with LG though. If you buy a Plasma HDTV, LG and Panasonic make good plasmas. Plasmas are the holy grail for movie watching.

Yes but you need to be aware of the costs. 3D TV's are not ridiculously expensive, but they aren't exactly cheap.
The cheapest 3D TV in Canada at least, is $2499 for a 40" Samsung LED LCD TV. You will need a 3D Blu Ray player to play the 3D blu rays which is $399 for the Samsung player. (Only player out currently, more are coming).
If you have a receiver and want to connect your 3D blu ray player to it, you will need a new receiver that has HDMI 1.4 which is needed to transmit all the data on a 3D Blu Ray disc.
If the 3D glasses don't come with the TV you will need to buy them, which cost around $149-$200 for one pair. Then the 3D Blu Rays will no doubt cost more than regular Blu Rays.
So all of that, is roughly $4000 CDN.
So as you can see, it's not ridiculously expensive, but it is not exactly cheap either.

Well, I have returned from my double Sam feature... and, damn, I didn't make it to Pandora yet again... I came back to see the other Sam in Clash of the Titans - and I must say, even though I was kidding initially, when calling him "Perseus Sully", his acting the hero who has to grow into his shoes (pun intended, since Perseus starts off barefoot... even though his toes aren't blue this time... :nlol:) is an almost exact copy of his acting in Avatar. Oh, BTW, if you intend to spend extra money to watch it in 3D: DON'T!! It's a waste of money, since the 3D effects have been added by CGI in post-production. It was filmed with 2D cameras and pimped up afterwards. And it shows.
Fun thing is, that we have again a girl saving Sam's butt... however, Io will never be even remotely as graceful, as deeply emotional and as hot as Neytiri is.
As far as the future of 3D quality and CGI/computer animation are concerned, I saw a trailer today that blew me away... never before had I seen better animated raindrops or ruffled feathers in 3D than in the trailer to Legend of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga'Hoole. That could be another must-see, when it comes out.
