Just wondering if anyone knows that when the Avatar blu ray 3d version does finally come out, Will it require a 3d T.V. to work? Some 3d movies have been released on disc without the need of 3D T.V.'s so do you guys think Avatar will require a 3D t.v.? I really hope not... :nconfused:

Maybe it will play on an ordinary TV but you won't see any 3-D so what would be the point...?

No, Avatar will probably never be released in anaglyph (red/blue glasses) 3D. You will need a 3D capable TV and a 3D capable Blu-ray player.

It will be at least a year before we see any 3D release of Avatar, likely more than that. As nimble has said, yes, you will need a new TV and Blu-ray player (unless you have a PS3), so unless you have about $3,000 to blow, wait until 3D becomes mainstream. Anaglyph 3D would never do justice to a film like this.

ok thanks. Dropping 3000 on a new T.V. doesn't sound like it's gonna happen lol. O well.

ive read that it requires a blueray player that supports 3d movies, a 3d television, and 3d glasses.

Yep.
3D compatible TV set and Blu-Ray player , no anaglyph.
At the start it may be watchable with special glasses only (shutter, polarized), later after a couple of years it should be possible to watch it without the aid of the glasses in the new generation of 3D quad full HD TVs.

I wish that there was a way to get RealD into your home without spending a fortune!

I used to think that I would not drop the money on a 3d tv but I went to the electronics store today and saw a demonstration today. I was blown away! I am definitely considering it now.

One of my friends has bought 3D-equipment for his computer and can now play all his games in really great 3D. The technique works for 3D-movies as well, but he cannot get hold of any 3D-movies to go with it. He hopes for when Avatar comes out on Blue-ray that he can watch it in 3D on his computer. Does anyone know if it will work?

It will work definitely, if his Graphic card and monitor support 3D but he needs a pair of glasses that are not anaglyph.

He has active shutter glasses, as well as a monitor and a graphic card which supports 3D. It works perfectly with games.
So... will Avatar be released in a format that one can use for viewing it in 3D with this equipment?

I don't believe it will this year !
We'll have, perhaps, two releases this year, one upcoming in April - barebones no extra features and maybe at the end of this year another one with extra footage, but I'm afraid both will be 2D.

That's a real bummer. Ah well. Thanks for the information, Demiurgos! :nsmile:

The April 22nd is just the movie, Cameron himself said they want to use the entire disc with only movie data so you get the highest quality movie possible. However the fall release will probably be in 3D, but yes as everyone has said you would need a 3D capable TV, which I suggest waiting till HDI releases their solution next year (HDI headquarters walkthrough: details galore on the new face of in-home 3D -- Engadget (http://www.engadget.com/2010/03/12/hdi-headquarters-walkthrough-details-galore-on-the-new-face-of/)) due to it's passive nature, which means it's more like the theater glasses. The active solution uses lcds to shut the image off to one eye at a time really quickly, and for some long viewings on an active system can cause headaches or eye strain. Before you decide on getting an active set go to an electronics store and watch a full movie on one of their sets.

No, it won't be. Cameron himself confirmed this.
